Honolulu
"That place of Polunu's was a flea trap," Lawrence Kilenowuka said.
"You mean a fire trap," Tom Palanaka said, correcting him.
"Don't tell me what I mean. I said a flea trap."
"Well, we shoulda burned it, anyway," Palanaka replied. "Kill fleas and teach the rat a lesson, all at once."
"Polunu's not going back there," George Inaki said. "Bastard's a traitor, but that doesn't make him stupid."
"He'll feel pretty fucking stupid when we nail him," Palanaka said.
"You think Tommy Puanani said the same thing on his way out to the Punchbowl?" Inaki asked.
No response to that from either of his men, which was good. Inaki wanted them to use their heads, instead of talking shit about how bad they were until it got them killed, and maybe him along with them.
They were rolling north on Dillingham Boulevard, toward Leia Aolani's place on Colburn Street. She had a small house, mortgaged to the hilt, and while Inaki knew it had been checked before, not once but several times, he hoped their luck might change.
In any case, LanaMla had commanded that they go back through the loop, on the off chance that Polunu or the woman might go home. Or, maybe, that the first teams sent to check out their places had missed something, let something fall through the cracks.
It would be bad for whoever had done the first sweep, if Inaki's crew found anything useful. He thought about that for a moment, then told himself screw 'em.
More than likely, Tommy Puanani and his boys had done the first sweep after Polunu had split from Pele's Fire. In which case, LanaMla couldn't punish them beyond what they'd already suffered at some stranger's hands.
His master's words echoed inside Inaki's head, now.
Don't come back until the job's done. Polunu and his bitch. Alive, if possible, but bring them in!
Of course, the hitch to grabbing them was finding them. Inaki didn't know if they were still in Honolulu — or still in Hawaii, for that matter. If he couldn't find them, though, he knew his ass was in a bind.
Don't come back until the job's done.
Meaning never.
If Inaki knew that they would fail, the best thing he could do was drop the others off somewhere and drive like hell away from Honolulu. Maybe up into the mountains, if he couldn't catch a flight for Indonesia, Singapore, New Zealand.
Any fucking place but here.
He turned left on Kalihi Street, then right on Colburn, slowing as he started reading the addresses. "Call out if you see it," he commanded. "That's 4418."
"Evens are on the right," Kilenowuka said.
"Okay. Good."
"There it is — 4416," Palanaka announced.
And there it was. Not much to look at, but a tidy place, a little on the small side, but well kept. Inaki wondered whether it was trashed inside, or if the other teams had simply waited on the street to see who came and went.
"I need a place to park," he said, already scanning curbs.
"Up on your left," Kilenowuka said. "Right there."
"Wrong way. I'll have to come around the block.
